As we look forward into the legal market of cannabis, small farmers have concerns if they will be able to compete in an open market with large corporations. One way small farmers can compete is by producing their own nutrients. By creating your own fermentations you can dramatically drop your costs by localizing your resources. By doing so, you also create a more tailored product to your specific region of cultivation. We’ve all heard local honey is good for us. In the same way, wild ferments are important. Using wild bacterias and yeast to create a fermentation builds immunities against local pathogens, increasing your plants pathogenic defense. Ferments not only increase your microbial population but help sustain your current microbial colonies immune system. 

What is Fermentation?

The ancient art of fermentation is a traditional practice found in almost every culture throughout history. It’s a practice used to maintain health and can be applied in any facet. It can be applied to improving both your health or your microbial populations health. Instead of using chemicals or synthetic nutrients which kill your soil year after year by switching to fermentations you can actually improve your soil vitality. 

Herbal fermentations are used to extract all the properties of the herbs you intend to use like in herbal tea. The only difference being after you brew your tea and add your honey, the tea needs to sit loosely covered for about a week. This allows natural or wild bacterias which are present in the air and on the surface of your herbs to break down the plants in the water. The wild bacterias or yeast then consume the honey or sugar and increase in population dramatically. After consuming the sugars the yeast begins converting them into alcohol. Herbal tea ferments usually only contain about 3% or less of alcohol content but be careful if you consume because some herbs can have psychotropic properties like wormwood.

Lactobacillus fermentations can be made the same way as your herbal tea fermentations however instead of adding honey or sugar I add either kefir, raw milk or fermented vegetables. Its very important if you use milk that its raw and milk straight from a cow, goat or sheep. Now a days, milk in grocery stores is pasteurized, meaning its been heated to kill off most all bacterias including billions of good ones our bodies thrive off of and so will your lactobacillus fermentation. Lactobacillus fermentations are packed with vitamin k and calcium, great for transition when your plants are growing the fastest.

Fruit fermentations can be made by adding fruit to a large bucket of water with your sugar or honey. I use water with the fruit juice to lower the alcohol percentage because over 3 % alcohol can be too strong for your plants. I like using bananas and plantains which are high in phosphorus but lower in acidity. Too much acidity can also be something to be careful of but if you only are using fruit fermentations at the end of your cycle (peak bloom) your plants will love it. If your looking for a nice purple or cherry flavor try grapes or elderberries.

What do you do?

Once a week as a family, we go on nature hikes. Collecting whatever wild herbs and flowers are season for the ferment. We look for things like yarrow, pine pollen and blackberry flowers as well as herbs from our own garden like rosemary and mint.  You can also specify your brew to your stage of growth, depending on what your fermenting. I use herbal tea ferments for the vegetive stage then in transition I like lactobacillus ferments switching to fruit ferments at peak bloom. Creating a more complex flavored flower with an increased terpene profile. There is also a very spiritual  part of the brew which includes being connected to the nature you intend to use. Stirring the brew once a day with loving pure intention is another key part to the magic.

A Walk In The Park

Here’s an example of a typical walk and what you might want to do

Step One

Go on a nature hike, collecting wild herbs and flowers from your property and nearby. Your Garden herbs work excellent as well.

examples: Yarrow, Dandylion, Watercress, Blackberry Flowers, Apple Flowers, Plum Flowers, Pine Pollen, Rosemary, Mint, Basil, Sage, Ginger, Borage, Horsetail, Pine Needles, Cedar Leaves.

Step Two

Add collected plants to a large pot of water. Simmer for 10 min just below a boil to extract all properties of the plants. 

Step Three

Add a Sugar for the yeast which is present in the air to consume. I use honey but you can use sugar,molasses, or maple syrup for example.

Step Four

Cover pot with a lid which is not air tight for 7-10 days. I use a piece of wood for example.

Step Five

Stir water once per day for 2-5 min connecting your thoughts and emotions in as pure of intention as possible. Think of love, family, healing, hope or any other pure good emotion.

* Masura Emote did a study on water crystals and emotions. He found that by freezing the water crystals and looking at them showed amazing results. Beautiful water crystals were formed by giving good words, playing music and offering prayer and blessing to the water.

Step Six

After 7-10 days strain out the plant parts from your fermented mix and the nutrients are ready to be used or bottled for future use. 

* Fermentation will occur faster in summer in warmer weather while its slower in colder weather and will take slightly longer.

*anaerobic sour smells are ok and a sign the fermentation is ready.

Step Seven

Feed your plants by diluting in water 1 part fermentation to 10 parts water.

The options of possibilities in plant combinations are endless in fermenting. The more you practice, the stronger the magic becomes. So keep practicing and sharing what works best with your friends!

  1. Wow! I’ve been using Local Honey for almost 40 Years now for my Allergies. I’m just getting started in Fermentation and it’s exciting to think of the possibilities here. Thank you for this information.
